Due to college rules and visa processing delays, international students enrolled in Canadian universities have stated that they are unable to withdraw from their courses and receive reimbursements.
Students utilising the fast-track study permit Student Direct Stream were expected to pay for a full year of study upfront, as well as a, CAN$10,000 Guaranteed Investment Certificate, as part of their study visa applications.
However, some of these students have been waiting for their applications to be processed for an extended length of time, including one who has been waiting since March 2020.
A number of students have complained that they are unable to withdraw their applications, reapply, or apply to other countries since their schools demand an IRCC student visa refusal.
If students withdraw without this, their universities withhold huge sums of money, which the students claim they cannot pay. They also added that they are stranded since their applications are not being denied or approved, making affordable refunds impossible.
One online student at Hanson College in Ontario said that he has completed two semesters, and if he tried to withdraw, he would not be refunded the fees for two semesters, which is $16,000.
