About Us
 
At the Safety Branch of the Department of Labour and Advanced Education, we are responsible for delivering effective and efficient regulatory management for the protection of the public and workers’ safety through education, outreach, inspection and enforcement, equipment registration, permits, and licenses.  Our staff of over 115 employees, located throughout Nova Scotia, do this by using the Pathways to Compliance to enhance compliance of provincially regulated employees, employers and contractors through setting, promoting, verifying and enforcing requirements under various pieces of legislation.
About Our Opportunity
 
As the Policy Analyst, in the Policy team of the Strategic Planning and Accountability division, you will work on and support policy development, implementation, and evaluation/monitoring within the Safety Branch. You will use formal processes and tools to develop policy documents, reports and recommendations, as well as regulations/legislation. You will conduct policy research and work with colleagues to inform policy initiatives that support departmental projects and initiatives.
 
The Policy Analyst uses formal processes and tools to develop policy documents, reports, and recommendations, as well as regulations/legislation.  As the Analyst, you conduct policy research, and work with colleagues to inform policy initiatives that support departmental projects and initiatives.
 
This position reports to the Manager of Policy in the Safety Branch.
Primary Accountabilities
 
The position is responsible for:
 
Providing comprehensive policy support and advice in the administration of the regulatory framework for Safety, including legislation, regulations, policies and procedures, and appointments.
Analytical policy research and analysis, applying proactive and innovative approaches to problem solving and development of recommendations to support decision making.
Leading the design and implementation of department-wide and divisional initiatives that improve effectiveness, increase consistency and contribute to continuous improvement of regulatory programs. This may involve participation on committees or liaise with other departments. 
Providing policy support for project design, policy tool development, planning, management, tracking and reporting; stakeholder consultation; policy development; presentations, briefing and communications materials. 
Provide expert advice in the assessment and development of regulatory management tools for achieving safety goals and performance measurement systems.
 
May perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
 
This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2 years of related experience an equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.
 
You have experience and understand the public policy development process and thrive on being innovative in policy analysis and development.  
 
As the ideal candidate you have a proven track record of innovation and demonstrate experience generating and implementing creative solutions based on solid business analysis and understanding that contributes to both business competitiveness and regulatory compliance.
 
You have strong facilitation skills, highly motivated and possesses strong organizational skills, research, and analytical skills.  You can build, establish, and maintain productive and collaborative working relationships with peers, clients, and a broad range of stakeholders both internally and externally.  You demonstrate above average verbal and written communication skills and be able to navigate complex and often conflicting situations with the capabilities to perform under tight timelines and changing priorities.
 
Well-developed presentation skills are also required.
 
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Pay Grade:  PR 10 – PR 15  
Salary Range:  $2,121.77 – $3,155.27 Bi-Weekly
